🇺🇸 US Traders — Read This First
Hyperliquid currently restricts access for US-based users due to ongoing regulatory considerations. If you’re in the United States, you’ll need a VPN to access the platform. I personally use FastVPN from Namecheap — it’s fast, affordable, and works reliably with Hyperliquid. Full instructions on setting it up are in Step 3 below. Please understand your local laws and regulations before proceeding.
Before you can trade a single perp on Hyperliquid, you need a self-custody wallet. That wallet is MetaMask — a browser extension that acts as your gateway to all of DeFi. It stores your private keys, connects to apps like Hyperliquid, and holds the USDC you’ll use as collateral. No MetaMask means no Hyperliquid. This guide gets you set up from absolute zero.
If you already have MetaMask installed and just need the trading setup, jump straight to our $100 beginner trading guide. If you’re starting from zero, follow every step below.

What You Need Before You Start
This setup works on Chrome, Brave, Firefox, or Edge on a desktop or laptop computer. MetaMask is available as a mobile app too, but for Hyperliquid trading the desktop browser extension gives you the best experience.
✅ Chrome or Brave browser
MetaMask works best on Chromium-based browsers. Download at chrome.google.com or brave.com.
✅ Pen and paper
You’ll need to write down a 12-word seed phrase. Write it by hand. Never store it digitally or take a photo of it.
✅ A Binance or Coinbase account
To buy USDC and send it to your MetaMask wallet. Any exchange that supports USDC on Arbitrum works.
🇺🇸 US only: FastVPN
Download from namecheap.com/vpn before starting. You’ll need it active before visiting app.hyperliquid.xyz.
Setup Steps — Follow in Order
Download MetaMask from the official website
Go to metamask.io — the official and only legitimate source for MetaMask. Click Download and then Install MetaMask for Chrome (or your browser). You’ll be taken to the Chrome Web Store. Click Add to Chrome → Add Extension. The MetaMask fox icon will appear in your browser toolbar when it’s installed. Warning: Never download MetaMask from any other source. There are fake extensions that steal wallets — always go directly to metamask.io.
Create a new wallet and write down your seed phrase
Click the MetaMask icon in your toolbar and select Create a new wallet. Set a strong password — this protects the wallet on this device only. Then MetaMask will show you your Secret Recovery Phrase — 12 random words in a specific order. Write these 12 words down on paper, in order, right now. Store that paper somewhere safe — not a photo, not a notes app, not email. These 12 words are the only way to recover your wallet if you lose access to your device. Anyone who gets these words controls your funds permanently.
🇺🇸 US Traders Only — Set Up FastVPN Before Connecting
Hyperliquid geo-blocks US IP addresses. Before you visit app.hyperliquid.xyz, you need a VPN active and connected to a non-US server. I use FastVPN from Namecheap — it’s reliable, fast enough not to cause execution lag, and reasonably priced. Here’s the setup:
③ Log in and connect to a server outside the US (UK, Canada, or Singapore work well)
④ Confirm your IP has changed — visit whatismyip.com and check the country shown
⑤ Keep FastVPN connected whenever you use Hyperliquid — connect first, then open the app
Note: This information is provided for educational purposes. Please research and understand the regulations in your jurisdiction before using a VPN to access any restricted service.
Add the Arbitrum network to MetaMask
Hyperliquid uses USDC on the Arbitrum network as collateral. MetaMask doesn’t have Arbitrum added by default, so you need to add it manually. The easiest way: go to chainlist.org, search “Arbitrum One”, and click Add to MetaMask. Confirm the pop-up in MetaMask. Alternatively, go to MetaMask → Settings → Networks → Add a Network and enter these details manually:
Network Name: Arbitrum One
RPC URL: https://arb1.arbitrum.io/rpc
Chain ID: 42161
Currency Symbol: ETH
Block Explorer: https://arbiscan.io
Buy USDC and send it to your MetaMask wallet
You need USDC (not ETH, not BTC — specifically USDC) on the Arbitrum network in your MetaMask wallet before you can deposit to Hyperliquid. Here’s the cleanest path: log in to your Binance or Coinbase account → buy USDC → withdraw to your MetaMask wallet address → make sure you select Arbitrum as the withdrawal network. Copy your MetaMask wallet address from the top of the MetaMask extension (it starts with 0x…) and paste it as the destination. Double-check the address before confirming — crypto transactions cannot be reversed. $50–$100 is a good starting amount for your first deposit.
Connect MetaMask to Hyperliquid
US traders: make sure FastVPN is connected first. Then go to app.hyperliquid.xyz. Click Connect Wallet in the top right corner and select MetaMask. A MetaMask pop-up will ask you to confirm the connection — click Connect. You’re now connected. You’ll see your wallet address in the top right corner of Hyperliquid. Next, click Deposit, enter the amount of USDC you want to move from your wallet into your Hyperliquid trading account, and confirm the transaction in MetaMask. Your funds will appear in your Hyperliquid account within 30–60 seconds.
You’re ready — place your first trade
Once your USDC shows up in your Hyperliquid account balance, you’re set up and ready to trade. Search for any market in the top search bar — BTC-PERP, ETH-PERP, or any of the 232+ markets available. Before placing your first live trade, read our perp contract explainer and our guide to funding rates — both explain the key mechanics that affect every position you’ll hold.
MetaMask Security — The Rules That Protect Your Funds
Self-custody means you are responsible for your own security. There is no bank to call, no customer service to recover a lost wallet, no chargeback. These rules are non-negotiable:
Rule
Why It Matters
Never share your seed phrase
Anyone with your 12 words owns your wallet instantly. No legitimate app, support agent, or website will ever ask for it.
Only download from metamask.io
Fake MetaMask extensions exist in browser stores. Always go directly to metamask.io and follow the official link to your browser’s extension store.
Store your seed phrase offline
Write it on paper. Store it somewhere physically secure. Never in a Google Doc, screenshot, email, or cloud storage. If your device is hacked, digital backups are compromised.
Double-check wallet addresses
Always verify the first 4 and last 4 characters of any wallet address before sending funds. Clipboard hijacking malware can change copied addresses.
Don’t connect to unknown sites
Only connect MetaMask to sites you trust and verified yourself. Malicious sites can request approval to drain your wallet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes — MetaMask has an iOS and Android app with a built-in browser. You can access Hyperliquid through the MetaMask mobile browser by navigating to app.hyperliquid.xyz from inside the app. However, the desktop experience is significantly better for active trading — the interface is larger, the chart is easier to read, and order entry is faster. For setup and occasional monitoring, mobile works fine. For actual trading, desktop is strongly recommended.
Hyperliquid uses USDC as its sole collateral token. This means all perp positions are margined in USDC — a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar. The reason is simplicity and risk management: if your collateral fluctuates in value (as ETH or BTC does), your margin and liquidation calculations become more complex. USDC collateral means your account balance is stable unless you’re actively in a losing position. You do need a tiny amount of ETH in your MetaMask wallet to pay Arbitrum network gas fees when depositing — usually less than $0.01. Arbitrum gas fees are extremely cheap.
There is no official minimum deposit on Hyperliquid — technically you can deposit any amount. In practice, very small deposits (under $20) limit your ability to trade meaningfully because position sizes need to cover margin requirements. $50–$100 is the sweet spot for a first deposit: large enough to trade a real position, small enough that a learning experience isn’t catastrophic. Our full $100 beginner guide shows exactly what a $100 starting balance looks like in practice.
MetaMask is the key that unlocks decentralized finance. Once it’s set up and funded with USDC, every door in DeFi is open — Hyperliquid, lending protocols, yield strategies, on-chain RWA markets. The setup takes about 20 minutes. The access it gives you lasts indefinitely.
If you’re a US trader — get FastVPN running before you do anything else on Hyperliquid. FastVPN from Namecheap is what I use every day and it hasn’t let me down. Connect to a non-US server, confirm your IP has changed, then head to app.hyperliquid.xyz.

I’m based in Jacksonville, FL and use FastVPN from Namecheap every time I access Hyperliquid. Setting up MetaMask was the single step that opened up all of DeFi for me — once you have a self-custody wallet and know how to fund it, the whole ecosystem becomes accessible. This guide is the one I wish existed when I started.
