Hyperliquid Vault Strategies:
How to Earn Passive Income
Without Trading

📅 September 2026 ⏱ 11 min read 🏦 Passive Income
Hyperliquid has two types of vaults — the protocol-owned HLP and over 2,000 community user vaults. Together they let you earn passive income as a market maker, a copy-trader, or a liquidity backer without placing a single active trade. Here’s the complete strategy guide.

⚠️ Not financial advice. Vault deposits can lose value. You are the counterparty to traders or backing a trading strategy — both can produce losses. Returns are variable and not guaranteed. Always research before depositing.
Hyperliquid’s vault ecosystem is one of the most interesting passive income systems in DeFi — and one of the least understood. Most people know about the HLP vault. Fewer know there are over 2,000 community-run vaults alongside it, covering strategies from market-neutral arbitrage to aggressive directional trading to copy-trading professional quant firms. All of them let you earn without placing a single active trade yourself.
This post covers the full picture: how HLP and user vaults differ, the four vault strategy types you’ll encounter, how to evaluate any vault before depositing using the metrics that actually matter, how vaults compare to other passive income options in DeFi, and the smart way to allocate across multiple vaults to balance risk and return. The Two Types of Vaults — HLP vs User Vaults

Every vault on Hyperliquid falls into one of two categories. Understanding the structural difference is the most important thing before you deposit anything.
🏦 HLP — The Protocol Vault
HLP combines three functions in a single vault: market-making, liquidations, and fee accrual — with 100% of profits flowing directly to depositors, no performance fee deducted by anyone.
✅ 0% performance fee
✅ No single operator
✅ Protocol-level trust
⏰ 4-day lockup
📊 15–30% APR historical
📈 User Vaults — Community Strategies
User vault leaders can open long and short perpetual positions, use leverage, trade multiple assets, and execute complex strategies. You are not lending — you are backing a trader.
⚠️ 10% performance fee
⚠️ Leader must hold min 5%
✅ Shorter 24h lockup
✅ Higher return potential
📊 Wide range: 0–100%+
The key mental model: Think of HLP as your conservative anchor — the “index fund” of Hyperliquid passive income. User vaults are like actively managed funds. Some beat HLP significantly. Most don’t. The difference between a vault worth depositing into and one that will wreck you comes down to risk-adjusted metrics — not raw returns. A vault showing +40% gross PnL means nothing if it drew down 60% in between and half the depositors withdrew at the bottom.

The Four Vault Strategy Types You’ll Encounter

Dozens of community sub-vaults exist in 2026. Some are run by professional trading firms operating semi-anonymously, some are quant strategies built by individual developers, some are simple long-only trend followers anyone can copy-trade. Here’s how to identify and evaluate each type:
1
Market-Neutral / Arbitrage Vaults
These vaults hedge long and short positions simultaneously to profit from price inefficiencies without taking directional risk. They look for funding rate differentials, basis spreads, and cross-market arbitrage. Lower returns than directional strategies but much more consistent — the hallmark of professional quant operation. What to look for: Sharpe ratio above 1.5, max drawdown under 15%, consistent positive months regardless of whether BTC is up or down. This is the strategy type most similar to HLP in risk profile.
Target APR: 20–45% · Max drawdown to expect: 10–20% · Sharpe: >1.5
2
Trend-Following / Momentum Vaults
These take directional positions based on price momentum — long when assets are trending up, short when trending down. They can produce spectacular returns in trending markets (BTC running from $60K to $120K, for example) and significant drawdowns in choppy, sideways markets. These are the vaults that show +200% in their best months on the leaderboard. They’re also the ones that lose 40–60% in extended ranging periods. Warning: Trend-following vaults that launched during a bull run will show inflated returns. Always check: what did this vault do during the last 3-month sideways period?
Target APR: 30–100%+ · Max drawdown to expect: 30–50% · Sharpe: 0.8–1.5
3
Market-Making User Vaults
Community-run market-making vaults work similarly to HLP but are operated by individual traders or quant firms rather than the protocol. They place resting limit orders to earn spreads and maker rebates. The risk profile is similar to HLP — they bleed on strongly trending days and earn steadily in ranging markets. The 10% performance fee reduces your effective return vs HLP, but some vault leaders have demonstrated better returns than HLP through more sophisticated market selection and position sizing. These are worth considering as a complement to HLP allocation.
Target APR: 15–40% · Max drawdown to expect: 8–20% · Sharpe: >1.2
4
Yield-Stacking Vaults (kHYPE + Pendle)
An emerging category in 2026 that uses Kinetiq’s kHYPE liquid staking token as the base collateral — earning HYPE staking yield while simultaneously deploying kHYPE in DeFi strategies through Pendle, HypeLend, or AMM liquidity pools. These compound the base 2.37% HYPE staking yield with additional strategy returns. More complex, more moving parts, but potentially the highest total yield available without active trading. As covered in our HYPE staking guide, kHYPE attracted over $40M in TVL on Pendle within weeks of integration.
Target APR: 8–25% total · Risk: Smart contract layers stack · Lockup: Varies by protocol

How to Evaluate Any Vault Before Depositing

The Hyperliquid vault leaderboard is public — every vault’s positions, trades, and returns are visible on-chain. Here are the five metrics that actually predict whether a vault is worth depositing into, versus one that will lose your money:
MetricWhat to Look ForRed Flag
Sharpe RatioAbove 1.5 is strong. The second vault gets its returns more consistently, with smaller swings.Below 0.5 is gambling.
Max DrawdownUnder 25% for market-neutral. Check if the vault recovered and how fast.A vault that drew down 45% needs an 82% gain just to get back to even.
Track Record LengthMinimum 60 days of live trading. Ideally 6+ months across different market conditions.Vaults that launched in a bull run with only uptrend data — no sideways or bear period shown.
Leader Skin-in-GameLeader must hold minimum 5% of vault equity. More is better — leaders who hold 20%+ have more to lose from bad decisions.Leader at minimum 5% with large depositor base — their personal exposure is tiny relative to the risk they’re taking with your money.
Depositor CompositionDepositor composition reveals who is actually in the vault. Large single depositors can exit and create a run effect on smaller depositors. One wallet holding 60%+ of vault TVL — if they leave, the vault’s apparent AUM crashes and strategy mechanics can break.
Passive Income Yield Comparison — Hyperliquid vs DeFi Alternatives High Med Low Top Vaults 20–60%+ HLP Vault 15–30% kHYPE Stack 8–25% Stablecoin 5–12% Aave USDC 4–8% HYPE Stake ~2.4%All rates variable. Higher yields carry higher risk. Past performance does not guarantee future returns.
Yield comparison across Hyperliquid passive income options vs DeFi alternatives. HLP sits well above lending protocols and liquid staking on return potential — but carries meaningfully higher short-term drawdown risk than stablecoin farms or HYPE staking.

Three Allocation Strategies — From Conservative to Aggressive

Smart depositors often allocate across multiple vaults, with HLP as the conservative anchor. Here are three practical allocation frameworks based on your risk appetite:
CONSERVATIVE
The Steady Accumulator
Target: 10–20% APR
70%
HLP Vault
20%
HYPE Staking
10%
1 User Vault (MN)
Best for: Long-term HYPE believers who want passive income without active management. HLP as the primary engine, HYPE staking for token accumulation, and a small allocation to one well-established market-neutral user vault with 6+ months of track record. Expect steady returns with occasional drawdown events that recover over weeks.
BALANCED
The Diversified Yield Farmer
Target: 20–40% APR
50%
HLP Vault
20%
MN Vault #1
20%
MN Vault #2
10%
kHYPE Stack
Best for: DeFi-comfortable depositors who have researched the vault leaderboard and identified two market-neutral user vaults with strong Sharpe ratios and 6+ months of track record. HLP as anchor, two non-correlated user vault strategies, and a small kHYPE position for HYPE staking yield on top. Review allocations monthly — exit user vaults immediately if Sharpe drops below 1.0.
AGGRESSIVE
The Alpha Seeker
Target: 40–80%+ APR
30%
HLP Vault
30%
Top MN Vault
25%
Trend Vault
15%
kHYPE/Pendle
High risk. Not for beginners. Only suitable for experienced DeFi users who actively monitor their positions and understand that 30–50% drawdowns are possible on the trend-following allocation. HLP as the floor, one well-researched market-neutral user vault, a modest trend-following allocation for upside exposure during bull phases, and kHYPE on Pendle for yield stacking. Set strict stop criteria: exit any user vault if max drawdown exceeds your pre-set threshold.
⚠️ The most common mistake: Chasing the highest APR vault on the leaderboard without checking the Sharpe ratio or track record length. A vault showing 400% APR with a 2-week history likely had one good trade. For a depositor who understands they are a short-vol market maker, sizing into HLP at 5% to 10% of a stablecoin allocation is defensible. Start small, observe for a full market cycle before committing large allocations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — anyone can create a user vault on Hyperliquid with no approval or registration required. To create one, navigate to the Vaults section of app.hyperliquid.xyz and click Create Vault. You’ll need to deposit a minimum amount to establish the vault and hold at least 5% of the total vault equity at all times as the leader. The vault then appears on the public leaderboard and other traders can deposit into it. If your vault generates profits above the high-water mark, you earn 10% of those profits as the vault leader. This makes Hyperliquid vaults a potential business model for successful traders — the more depositors you attract and the better you perform, the more your 10% cut is worth. There’s no limit on strategy type, leverage, or market selection.
This is the key risk of user vaults. The protocol requires vault leaders to hold a minimum 5% of total vault equity — they can’t exit entirely while depositors remain. However, if the vault TVL is large (say $10M) and the leader holds 5% ($500K), they still have meaningful skin in the game. If TVL is small ($100K) and the leader’s 5% is just $5K, the risk/reward alignment is much weaker. Always check the leader’s actual dollar exposure, not just the percentage. You can view this on-chain through the vault’s public transaction history. The 24-hour lockup for user vault depositors (vs 4 days for HLP) means you can exit relatively quickly if you see concerning activity — monitor open positions and leadership activity regularly rather than depositing and ignoring.
JLP, GLP, and MegaVault all run a single protocol-controlled strategy. Hyperliquid runs a vault marketplace. The structural difference matters. GLP and JLP are basket tokens — you hold a mix of assets and provide liquidity to traders against that basket. HLP is a pure USDC vault — no crypto price exposure, just USDC backing a market-making operation. This means HLP doesn’t give you indirect BTC/ETH exposure the way GLP does — your losses or gains come entirely from the market-making strategy, not underlying token prices. Historically, HLP has produced better risk-adjusted returns than GLP across most comparable periods in 2025–2026, partly because Hyperliquid’s volume growth has been faster than GMX’s and partly because pure stablecoin backing removes the asset-price component. That said, GLP and JLP are more established products with longer track records and better tooling for tax reporting — both are worth considering in a broader passive income portfolio.

The Bottom Line

Hyperliquid’s vault ecosystem is a genuine passive income engine — but only if you approach it with discipline. HLP is the anchor: protocol-backed, zero fees, battle-tested through multiple market cycles with 15–30% APR sustained across most quarters. User vaults offer the potential for higher returns from talented traders and quant strategies, but they require due diligence that most people skip.
The strategy is simple in principle: use HLP as your floor, add well-researched user vaults only after you’ve verified Sharpe ratio, drawdown history, and track record length, and keep HYPE staking running in the background for token accumulation. Together, these three layers can produce a passive income stack that genuinely outperforms most alternatives in DeFi — without you placing a single active trade.

I run HLP as my passive income anchor and actively research the vault leaderboard for market-neutral user vaults with strong Sharpe ratios. The key habit I’ve developed: never chase APR — always check the Sharpe first. A vault with 25% APR and a Sharpe of 2.0 beats a vault with 80% APR and a Sharpe of 0.4 every single time over a full market cycle.
