This post focuses on the investment case — whether HYPE is worth buying and holding as an asset in 2026–2027. The posts above cover mechanics and staking.
The question “should I buy HYPE?” is a different question from “what is HYPE?” You can understand the token perfectly and still be unsure whether it belongs in your portfolio at the current price and market stage. This post is specifically about the investment case — the reasons to buy, the reasons not to, the risks that matter, and how to think about position sizing if you decide to hold some.
The short version: HYPE is one of the few tokens in crypto with a genuine and growing revenue model behind it. That doesn’t make it risk-free — no crypto asset is — but it does make the analysis more grounded than most. Let’s run through it.
What Actually Gives HYPE Its Value
Most crypto tokens get their value from speculation alone — there’s no underlying cash flow, no revenue, no buyback mechanism. HYPE is different. Its value proposition rests on three concrete mechanisms.
1
Fee revenue → buybacks
Hyperliquid generates significant fee revenue from its $10B+ daily trading volume. A portion of these fees flows into the Assistance Fund, which is used to buy HYPE tokens on the open market. These are permanent buybacks — purchased and removed from circulating supply. The higher Hyperliquid’s trading volume, the more HYPE gets bought and removed. This creates a direct link between platform growth and token price pressure.
2
Staking reduces circulating supply
When HYPE holders stake their tokens to help secure the Hyperliquid network, those tokens are locked and removed from circulating supply for the staking period. A meaningful percentage of the circulating supply is already staked. Staking yield is paid in HYPE — attracting more stakers, further reducing what’s available on the market. Supply compression combined with demand-side buybacks is a constructive setup for price over time, all else being equal.
3
Governance over a $10B+ platform
HYPE holders have governance rights over one of the largest and fastest-growing trading platforms in crypto. Protocol decisions, fee changes, new market listings, and treasury allocations are all subject to governance. As Hyperliquid’s importance in the DeFi ecosystem grows, so does the value of having a say in how it operates. Governance tokens on dominant protocols have historically commanded premium valuations.
The Bull Case for HYPE in 2026–2027
Here are the strongest arguments for HYPE as an investment at this stage of the market cycle.
📈 Bull 1 — Hyperliquid is the dominant perp DEX and growing
Hyperliquid processed more derivatives volume in July 2026 than every other DEX combined. It’s not one of several competing platforms — it’s the clear market leader with a significant technical moat (its own L1 chain, sub-second execution, and native TradingView integration). Market leaders in crypto tend to compound their dominance. More volume → more fee revenue → more HYPE buybacks → upward price pressure. The flywheel is established and turning.
📈 Bull 2 — RWA perps are a massive untapped market
Hyperliquid’s tokenised real-world asset (RWA) perps — US stocks, gold, silver, indices, pre-IPO companies, all tradeable 24/7 without KYC — are one of the most compelling product expansions in DeFi. In July 2026, RWA perp volume on Hyperliquid exceeded all crypto perp volume on every other DEX in a single week. This is still very early. The total addressable market for 24/7 global access to stock and commodity derivatives is enormous, and Hyperliquid currently has it almost entirely to itself. HYPE benefits directly from every dollar of volume this generates.
📈 Bull 3 — No VC overhang, no team dump risk
Hyperliquid raised no external venture capital. There is no VC allocation waiting to unlock and dump on retail buyers. The token distribution was conducted via airdrop to real users of the platform — people who had actually traded on Hyperliquid, not VCs who paid pennies for locked tokens. This is unusual and structurally healthier than the vast majority of VC-backed DeFi tokens where early investor unlocks routinely crater the price.
📈 Bull 4 — Genuine revenue, not speculative tokenomics
HYPE is backed by one of the most profitable protocols in crypto. Hyperliquid’s fee revenue is real, verifiable on-chain, and growing. You can think of HYPE as equity in a revenue-generating exchange — not perfectly analogous, but closer to that model than most DeFi tokens. In a market where most token valuations are disconnected from any underlying business, this is a genuine differentiator.
The Bear Case — Why HYPE Might Underperform
The bull case is compelling. But an honest analysis requires taking the bear case seriously. Here are the strongest arguments against buying HYPE at current levels.
⚠️ Bear 1 — Large team allocation still unlocking
While there’s no VC allocation, the Hyperliquid team holds a significant portion of the total token supply. A substantial portion of the total 1 billion HYPE supply remains with the team and future emissions. If the team begins selling or if unlock schedules create persistent sell pressure, this can weigh on price even in a growing market. Tracking team wallet activity and unlock schedules is important due diligence before buying.
⚠️ Bear 2 — Regulatory risk on RWA perps
The RWA perp product — trading Tesla, Nvidia, and the S&P 500 without a broker licence or KYC — is exactly the kind of product that draws regulatory attention. The US in particular has shown willingness to pursue offshore exchanges offering stock-like products to US persons (see: Binance, BitMEX). If regulators target Hyperliquid’s RWA perps, the volume from that segment could disappear rapidly, taking a meaningful chunk of the revenue case with it.
⚠️ Bear 3 — Competition from better-capitalised rivals
Hyperliquid’s dominance is real but not guaranteed. Binance, Coinbase, and other large centralised exchanges have the capital and user bases to launch competing perp DEX products. dYdX continues to develop. New entrants with VC backing could attempt to replicate Hyperliquid’s stack. Network effects in DeFi are real but not insurmountable — as anyone who used FTX, then moved to Binance, then moved to Hyperliquid knows.
⚠️ Bear 4 — Smart contract / bridge risk
The JELLY incident in March 2025 exposed a real attack vector — a bad actor manipulated a low-liquidity market to create a $12M shortfall that the Insurance Fund had to absorb. The fund covered it cleanly, but it demonstrated that the system isn’t invulnerable. A larger, more sophisticated attack on the protocol, bridge, or smart contracts could cause significantly more damage and directly impact HYPE’s price and the platform’s credibility.
How HYPE Compares to Other Exchange and Protocol Tokens
Context matters in crypto investing. Here’s how HYPE’s investment case stacks up against other tokens in the same category.
By these metrics HYPE sits at the top of its peer group. The combination of genuine fee revenue, no VC overhang, active buybacks, and staking yield is unusual. BNB is the closest comparable — a dominant exchange token with buyback mechanics — but BNB carries Binance’s centralisation and regulatory exposure. HYPE operates on a public blockchain with no custodial risk.
Who Should Consider Buying HYPE — and Who Shouldn’t
✅ Consider buying if you…
Already use Hyperliquid actively and believe in the platform
Want crypto exposure with an underlying revenue model
Plan to stake it for yield rather than trade in and out
Can hold through volatility for 1–2+ years
Understand it’s still a speculative asset despite the fundamentals
Are sizing it as a portion of a broader portfolio, not an all-in bet

⚠️ Think carefully if you…
Are buying purely because price is rising
Plan to sell at the first sign of a dip
Would be financially hurt if it fell 70–80% (it can)
Don’t understand the underlying platform
Are buying with money you need in the next 12 months
Expect it to “10x” on a specific timeline

📐 A note on position sizing
Even if you’re convicted on HYPE’s long-term case, position sizing matters. Most experienced crypto investors size individual altcoin positions at 2–10% of total crypto portfolio. The higher your conviction and the longer your time horizon, the higher the position can be — but no single token should represent a position whose loss would materially change your financial situation. HYPE can and has drawn down 60–80% from peak in risk-off crypto markets. Size for the drawdown, not for the expected gain.
How to Actually Buy and Hold HYPE
If you’ve decided to add HYPE to your portfolio, here’s the most direct path.
1
Get USDC onto Hyperliquid. Buy USDC on Coinbase or Kraken, withdraw on the Arbitrum network, and deposit to your Hyperliquid account. The Ultimate Guide covers the full process step by step.
2
Buy HYPE on the spot market. Navigate to the spot trading section on Hyperliquid and buy HYPE/USDC. Use a limit order at your target price to avoid paying the taker spread unnecessarily on a large buy.
3
Stake for yield. If you’re holding long-term, stake your HYPE to earn staking rewards rather than leaving it idle. Staked HYPE earns yield in HYPE, compounds your position, and reduces circulating supply. Full staking walkthrough: How to Stake HYPE Tokens and Earn Passive Rewards.
4
Set a re-evaluation trigger, not a stop-loss. HYPE as a long-term hold is different from a trading position. Rather than a price-based stop, decide in advance what would change your fundamental view — e.g. a significant drop in platform volume, a successful competitor launching, or regulatory action against RWA perps. Review against these triggers periodically rather than reacting to price moves.

The Bottom Line
HYPE has a stronger fundamental investment case than most crypto tokens. Real fee revenue, real buybacks, no VC overhang, staking yield, and governance rights over the dominant perp DEX on the planet. The bear case is real too — team unlock pressure, regulatory risk on RWA perps, competition, and smart contract risk all warrant serious consideration.
The honest answer to “should you buy HYPE?” is: it depends on your time horizon, your risk tolerance, your position sizing, and whether you believe Hyperliquid’s platform dominance will continue to grow. What I can say with confidence is that the investment thesis is grounded — more so than almost any other token in DeFi right now.
