Bitcoin is the most searched, most traded, most talked-about asset in crypto. And most people who want to trade it still go through a centralised exchange — create an account, submit their ID, wait for approval, deposit funds, hope the company doesn’t go under. FTX looked bulletproof. Celsius looked safe. They weren’t.
Hyperliquid is a different model entirely. You connect your wallet, deposit USDC, and trade Bitcoin perpetuals directly — no account signup, no ID verification, no company holding your funds. Everything happens on-chain, and your assets remain under your control at all times. This guide walks you through the entire process from scratch.
⚠️ Before you start: This guide assumes you have a MetaMask wallet and some USDC. If you’re starting from zero — no wallet, no crypto — read the Ultimate Guide to Hyperliquid first. It covers wallet setup and your first deposit step by step.
What You’re Actually Trading — BTC Perpetuals Explained
When you trade Bitcoin on Hyperliquid, you’re not buying actual BTC coins. You’re trading a Bitcoin perpetual contract (BTC-PERP) — a derivative that tracks the price of Bitcoin without requiring you to hold the underlying asset. This is how most professional Bitcoin trading works.
💰 Spot BTC (buy the coin)
You own actual Bitcoin. You can withdraw it to a hardware wallet. You profit only if price goes up. No leverage. You pay full price per coin. Best for long-term holding.
📈 BTC-PERP on Hyperliquid
You trade price exposure — USDC as margin. Can go long (profit if price rises) or short (profit if price falls). Leverage up to 40x. Settled in USDC. Best for active trading.
💡 What is a perpetual contract?
A perpetual contract is like a futures contract that never expires. It tracks Bitcoin’s price in real time and is settled in USDC. You put up a margin deposit (e.g. $200 USDC) and control a larger notional position (e.g. $1,000 of BTC exposure at 5x leverage). The profit or loss on the position is credited or debited to your USDC balance when you close. There’s also a funding rate — a small periodic payment between longs and shorts that keeps the perp price anchored to the spot price. More on that below.
Step-by-Step: How to Start Trading BTC on Hyperliquid
1
Get USDC and send it to your MetaMask wallet
Buy USDC on Coinbase or Kraken using your bank account or card. When withdrawing, select the Arbitrum network — not Ethereum mainnet (fees are much higher on mainnet). The USDC will arrive in your MetaMask wallet within a few minutes. You need USDC specifically — not ETH, not BTC — because Hyperliquid uses USDC as its settlement currency.
2
Connect your wallet to Hyperliquid
Go to app.hyperliquid.xyz/join/CRYPTOJAG — using this link gives you a permanent 4% discount on taker fees. Click “Connect Wallet” in the top right. Select MetaMask, approve the connection, and sign the message (this is not a transaction, just a signature to verify you own the wallet). No account is created. No email required. You’re connected.

3
Deposit USDC into Hyperliquid
Click “Deposit” in the top right of the interface. Enter the amount of USDC you want to deposit and confirm in MetaMask. The deposit takes 1–2 minutes to arrive. Start with an amount you’re comfortable losing entirely — this is leveraged trading and losses are possible. Your USDC sits in a smart contract on the Hyperliquid L1 chain. No company can freeze or seize it.
4
Navigate to the BTC-PERP market
Click “Trade” from the top navigation. In the market selector on the left, type “BTC” or scroll to find BTC-PERP. Click it. You’ll see the live BTC price chart, the order book, and the trading panel on the right. This is your interface for placing trades. The chart connects to TradingView — all the standard indicators are available.
5
Set your leverage
In the order panel, you’ll see a leverage slider. For your first trade, keep it at 2x–5x maximum. Higher leverage means a smaller price move can liquidate your position. At 2x leverage, BTC needs to move 50% against you before liquidation. At 20x, it only needs to move 5%. Start low, learn the mechanics, then adjust as you build experience.
6
Place your first BTC trade
Choose Buy/Long if you think Bitcoin’s price will rise, or Sell/Short if you think it will fall. Enter your position size in USD (this is your notional exposure — at 5x leverage a $500 USDC margin gives you $2,500 in BTC exposure). Use a limit order at your target entry price to avoid the taker fee and collect the maker rebate instead. Set your stop-loss before confirming the trade. Click confirm and sign in MetaMask.
7
Manage your position and close it
Once filled, your open position appears at the bottom of the screen. You can see your entry price, current P&L (unrealised), liquidation price, and margin used. To close: click the position, then “Close Position”. You can close fully or partially. Use a limit order to close at your target price and collect the rebate, or a market order if you need to exit immediately. Your realised P&L settles instantly in USDC to your account balance.
A Worked Example — BTC Long Trade at 5x Leverage
Here’s exactly what a real trade looks like with specific numbers, so you can see how the maths works before you risk real money.
Note: In this example, even though you’re using 5x leverage, your stop-loss is set to only lose $50 on a $500 margin position — 10% of your margin, 2% of the notional. Your liquidation price is far below your stop-loss, so a functioning stop prevents liquidation. This is correct risk management for a leveraged BTC trade. The stop protects the account; the leverage magnifies the gain when you’re right.
The Funding Rate — What It Is and When It Matters for BTC
Perpetual contracts don’t expire, but they stay anchored to the Bitcoin spot price through a mechanism called the funding rate. This is important to understand before holding BTC-PERP positions overnight or for multiple days.
When funding is POSITIVE
Longs pay shorts. This happens when the perp price is trading above the spot price — meaning more demand for long exposure than short. If you’re holding a long BTC position and funding is positive, a small periodic fee is deducted from your margin. In strong bull markets, this can be 0.05–0.1%+ per 8 hours.
When funding is NEGATIVE
Shorts pay longs. This happens when the perp price is below spot — usually in bearish or fearful markets. If you’re holding a long and funding is negative, you actually receive a small payment every 8 hours. Negative funding on BTC is often a contrarian signal that selling pressure is exhausted.
💡 Practical rule for beginners
For short-term trades (intraday or a day or two), funding is usually negligible. For positions held for several days or weeks, check the funding rate before opening. Very high positive funding on BTC longs is a headwind that erodes your position even if price stays flat — and it’s a warning sign that the market is overextended. The current BTC funding rate is always visible in the trade panel.
Why Trade BTC on Hyperliquid vs Buying BTC on a CEX?
📋 The right tool for the right goal
Buy and hold BTC long-term? Buy real BTC on a CEX and withdraw to a cold wallet. Actively trade Bitcoin price movements? BTC-PERP on Hyperliquid — lower fees, both directions, no middleman. The two approaches serve different goals. Most serious crypto participants do both: hold real BTC for long-term exposure, trade BTC-PERP for active opportunities.
Beginner Mistakes to Avoid on Your First BTC Trade
❌
Opening without a stop-loss
A BTC trade without a stop-loss is not a trade — it’s a lottery ticket. Set your stop-loss before you confirm the entry. If the market gaps through it, the stop triggers immediately on the next available price. The risk of not having one — a position running to liquidation — is catastrophic. See the stop-loss guide for exact setup steps.
❌
Using too much leverage too soon
At 20x leverage, a 5% move against you wipes your margin. BTC regularly moves 3–8% in a single day. Your first trades should use 2x–5x at most — enough to feel the leverage mechanics, not enough to blow the account on a normal intraday swing. You can scale leverage up when you have a track record of profitable trades at lower leverage.
❌
Sizing too large relative to your account
Risk no more than 1–2% of your account on any single trade. If you have $1,000 in your account, that means a maximum stop-loss of $10–$20 per trade — not $200. Most beginners risk 20–50% of their account on their first trade. That’s not trading, it’s gambling. Small sizing lets you make mistakes and learn without being wiped out. See the position sizing guide for the full framework.
❌
Moving your stop-loss because you don’t want to take the loss
This is the #1 way to turn a small, manageable loss into an account-wrecking one. When price approaches your stop, your first instinct will be to move it lower. Don’t. Your pre-trade analysis set that level for a reason. A stop-loss moved away from price is a stop-loss that no longer protects you.

The Bottom Line
Trading Bitcoin on Hyperliquid is one of the most accessible, lowest-cost, and most powerful ways to get active price exposure to the world’s most liquid crypto asset. No account signup. No KYC. No company holding your funds. Just a wallet, USDC, and a market that’s open 24 hours a day.
The mechanics take one session to learn and a lifetime to master. Start small, always set a stop, keep leverage low until you have a track record, and treat every trade as a lesson. The edge comes from process, not from position size.
