How to Use TWAP Orders
on Hyperliquid

📅 September 2026 ⏱ 10 min read ⏲ Order Types
TWAP splits a large order into smaller chunks executed at regular intervals — so you stop moving the market against yourself and get a better average price. Here’s exactly how it works on Hyperliquid, with a step-by-step setup guide.
Slice 1 Slice 2 Slice 3 Slice 4 Slice 5 Slice 6 Slice 7 TWAP EXECUTION — 7 equal slices at fixed time intervals Each slice = 1/7 of total order size · Executed automatically · Better average than single market order ─ ─ TWAP avg price price
If you’ve ever opened a large position on Hyperliquid with a market order and watched the price immediately move against you right after you filled — that’s market impact. You moved the price with your own order. TWAP is the built-in solution: instead of hitting the market with your full size at once, the TWAP engine splits your order into equal slices and executes them at regular intervals over a time period you define. The result is a smoother average entry price that doesn’t telegraph your intentions to other traders or push the market before you’re fully in.
Hyperliquid’s TWAP is native to the platform — it appears right in the order tab alongside Market, Limit, and Stop orders. No third-party tools, no bots, no API required. This guide walks through exactly how it works, how to configure it, when to use it, and when not to.

What Is TWAP? The Plain English Explanation

TWAP stands for Time-Weighted Average Price. At its core it answers one question: how do you fill a large order without moving the market against yourself in the process?
When you send a large market order all at once, you consume liquidity from the order book in one hit — eating through multiple price levels and paying more than the best offer as the book clears in front of you. Anyone watching the order flow can also see a large order land and front-run the next slice. TWAP solves both problems by spreading execution across time.
❌ Single Market Order — $50,000 BTC Long
You hit Buy at $62,000. The first $10K fills at $62,000. The next $15K fills at $62,008. The next $15K at $62,019. Final $10K at $62,031. Your average entry: $62,014 — $14 of slippage per BTC, all at once, with your hand fully tipped to the market.
✅ TWAP — Same $50,000 Over 30 Minutes
$7,143 executes every 4 minutes across 7 slices. Each slice hits a refreshed order book with replenished liquidity. Price fluctuates naturally between slices — some fill higher, some lower. Average entry: closer to $62,003. Less slippage, less market impact, less information leakage.
Who uses TWAP professionally? Institutional traders, hedge funds, and market makers have used TWAP as a standard execution algorithm for decades on traditional markets. On Hyperliquid, it’s now available to any retail trader with a wallet — giving you the same execution tool the professionals use, built directly into the interface.

The Four Settings That Control Your TWAP

When you open the TWAP tab on Hyperliquid, you’ll see four configuration fields. Here’s exactly what each one does and how to think about setting it.
1
Total Size — How Much You Want to Buy or Sell
This is your total position size in USDC notional value — the full amount you want to enter or exit. TWAP will divide this equally across all your slices. Set this the same way you’d set the size on a regular order, using the same position sizing and leverage principles you apply to any trade.
Example: Total size $10,000 USDC on BTC at 5x leverage
= $50,000 notional BTC position split across all slices
2
Duration — How Long the TWAP Runs
The total time window for all slices to execute. Hyperliquid lets you set this in minutes. A longer duration means more slices, more time between each, and generally a smoother average price — but slower execution. A shorter duration executes faster but with fewer slices and potentially more market impact per slice.
Short (5–15 min): Fast entry, fewer slices — good for smaller sizes
Medium (30–60 min): Balanced — most common use case
Long (2–4 hrs): Maximum smoothing — for very large sizes only
3
Number of Slices — How Many Sub-Orders
How many equal-size child orders the TWAP engine creates from your total. More slices = smaller individual orders = less impact per execution, but more fills and slightly more total fee cost (each slice pays the taker fee). Fewer slices = larger individual orders = potentially more impact, but fewer fee events.
Rule of thumb: aim for each slice to be ≤ 5–10% of the
market’s average 1-minute volume for that asset.
BTC: can handle large slices. Altcoins: use more slices.
4
Side — Long (Buy) or Short (Sell)
Choose Buy/Long to build a long position over time, or Sell/Short to either enter a short or systematically exit an existing long. TWAP works symmetrically — the same logic applies whether you’re scaling into a position or scaling out of one. Using TWAP to exit a large long is just as valid as using it to enter: you avoid dumping large sell orders into the book and depressing your own exit price.

How to Set Up a TWAP Order on Hyperliquid — Step by Step

Finding TWAP in the Hyperliquid interface is straightforward once you know where to look.
①
Go to app.hyperliquid.xyz and select your market
Navigate to the trade interface and select the perpetual market you want to trade — BTC-USDC, ETH-USDC, or any of the 230+ markets. TWAP is available on all perp markets.
②
Find the TWAP tab in the order panel
In the order placement area (bottom of the trading panel on desktop, or the order tab on mobile), look for the order type tabs: Market · Limit · Stop · TWAP · Chase. Click TWAP. The input fields will change to show the TWAP configuration options.
③
Set your total size, duration, and number of slices
Enter your total order size in USDC (or as a % of your balance using the slider). Set your duration in minutes. Set your slice count. Hyperliquid shows you the size of each individual slice so you can sanity-check it’s a reasonable amount relative to the market’s liquidity.
Example setup for a $5,000 ETH long:
Total size: $5,000 · Duration: 30 min · Slices: 10
→ Each slice: $500 every 3 minutes
④
Select Buy/Long or Sell/Short and confirm
Choose your direction — Buy/Long to enter or add to a long, Sell/Short to enter a short or exit a long. Confirm the order. Hyperliquid will show the active TWAP in your Open Orders panel as a single TWAP entry. You can cancel the entire TWAP at any time from there — any remaining unexecuted slices will be cancelled immediately.
⑤
Monitor execution in Trade History and set your stop-loss
As each slice executes, it appears in your Trade History tab. Your position in the Positions panel grows with each fill — you’ll see the average entry price update after every slice. Important: once you begin a TWAP, set a stop-loss order on the position immediately — even before all slices have filled. The stop will only close existing position size, not cancel pending TWAP slices, so you may need to cancel the TWAP separately if your stop triggers mid-execution.

Worked Example — $10,000 BTC Long via TWAP

Let’s walk through a real scenario to show how TWAP actually plays out on a live position.
SliceTimeBTC Mark PriceSlice SizeFill Price
1/510:00:00$62,000$2,000$62,003
2/510:06:00$61,840$2,000$61,842 ↓ better
3/510:12:00$61,920$2,000$61,923 ↓ better
4/510:18:00$62,050$2,000$62,053
5/510:24:00$62,110$2,000$62,112
Average24 min totalRanged $61,840–$62,110$10,000$61,986 avg
The result: Average entry of $61,986 vs the starting price of $62,000. The dip on slices 2 and 3 automatically improved the average — something that never happens with a single market order. On a $10,000 position this saves roughly $14 in price. On a $100,000 position, that same proportional saving is $140 — meaningful, especially when the taker fee on $10,000 is only $4.50.

When to Use TWAP — And When Not To

✅ Use TWAP When…
— Your order size is large relative to the market’s liquidity (any order in a mid-cap altcoin that would visibly move the book)

— You’re entering or exiting a position over a defined time window and don’t need to be fully in immediately

— You want to dollar-cost average into a breakout — confirming the move is real as each slice fills

— You’re exiting a large position and don’t want your own sell orders to move price against you

— You’re trading an altcoin or memecoin perp with a wider spread and thinner book
❌ Don’t Use TWAP When…
— You need to enter right now — a momentum breakout, a news event, a fast-moving setup where waiting 30 minutes costs you the trade

— Your position size is small relative to market depth — BTC and ETH on Hyperliquid can absorb $5,000 market orders with negligible slippage

— You’re scalping on a 1-minute or 5-minute timeframe — TWAP over 30 minutes is useless for short-term trades

— You have a very specific entry level in mind — a limit order at that exact price is more precise than TWAP

Frequently Asked Questions

Not guaranteed — but statistically likely for larger orders. If price moves strongly in one direction during your TWAP window (e.g. BTC dumps 3% over 30 minutes while you’re buying), the later slices fill at lower prices and you’ll get a better average than if you’d bought it all upfront. If BTC pumps 3% during your window, your later slices fill higher and you’d have been better off with a single market order at the start. TWAP reduces variance in your entry price rather than guaranteeing improvement — which is exactly what it’s designed to do. For large orders, less variance in entry price usually means less risk overall.
Yes — you can cancel a TWAP at any time from the Open Orders panel. Any slices that have already executed remain as part of your position; only the remaining unexecuted slices are cancelled. So if 3 of 7 slices have filled when you cancel, you’ll hold a position 3/7ths the size you originally intended. This is particularly useful if news breaks mid-TWAP or if price action changes your view on the trade — you can stop execution and manage the partial position you already have.
Hyperliquid’s TWAP executes each slice as a market order at the time interval — taking whatever the best available price is at that moment. This means each slice pays the taker fee (0.045%). Unlike a manual strategy where you might place limit orders for each slice to earn the maker rebate (−0.01%), TWAP prioritises execution certainty over fee optimisation. For most TWAP use cases — large positions where slippage reduction is the goal — the small fee premium over a limit-order approach is easily outweighed by the time savings and automation benefit. If fee efficiency is your primary concern on a smaller order, a series of manual limit orders may be more appropriate.

The Bottom Line

TWAP is one of the most underused order types on Hyperliquid — most retail traders don’t know it exists, and those who do often overlook it for smaller trades where it genuinely helps. It isn’t for every trade: fast momentum entries, scalps, and small positions in liquid markets don’t need it. But for anyone building a meaningful position in a mid-cap altcoin perp, exiting a large winner without moving price against themselves, or simply wanting to execute more like an institutional trader — TWAP is the tool.
The setup takes thirty seconds. It runs automatically. And the next time you’re sizing into a position that’s large enough to visibly move the order book — that’s exactly when you’ll be glad you know how to use it.

TWAP is the order type I wish someone had explained to me in plain English when I first started trading. It’s sitting right there in the Hyperliquid interface — same tab bar as Market and Limit — and most traders walk right past it. Once you start using it for larger altcoin entries, going back to a single market order feels reckless. The setup takes thirty seconds and the machine does the rest.
