What is 2FA and why do I need it?

2FA or 2 factor authentication (or 2 step verification) is a security measure (or extra layer of protection) to keep your crypto wallet or crypto account safe and secure from hackers.  In my opinion, 2FA should be utilized whenever available.  I try and make 2 factor authentication a personal habit to use whenever possible.

How does 2FA work?

2 factor authentication works by using a separate app downloaded on your smartphone  via the app for account verficication.  The most common app is Google authenticator.  When logging into your crypto wallet or exchange account a separate code is sent to your smartphone to verify it’s you trying to login.  Upon entering the code from your smartphone app login is granted.

Why do I need 2FA?

When you have enabled 2 factor authentication, if someone (a hacker) gains access to your password and tries to access your account, the extra layer of security that 2FA provides will prevent the hacker from gaining access to your account.  Unlike your password, your 2FA code changes with each login attempt.

The code changes periodically (usually within 20-30 seconds) on your smartphone.  Without a hacker having access to your smartphone, even with your password, the hacker is prevented from gaining access to your wallet or exchange account.
